The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is one of the most important elements of living a victorious christian life. When we come to more fully understand the plan of God for His people upon the earth, we will see the baptism in the Holy Spirit as a necessity, not an option.

The indwelling Holy Spirit comes to live in all God’s children when we receive Jesus Christ as our personal savior. It is this indwelling that initiates the born-again experience. John 3:1-8; Romans 8; Titus 3:3 This indwelling presence makes us a child of God, gives us a divine connection between flesh and blood and God who is Spirit, and plants within us the seed of the character and nature of Jesus himself. The fruits of the Spirit begin to develop within us.

The majority of Jesus’ teaching in the gospels refers to the coming “indwelling” of the Holy Spirit. This would occur after man was once and for all cleansed of his sin by the shed blood of Christ. Born-again man would once again enjoy a relationship with Father God, as he once had in the garden. It’s a beautiful thing.

However, Jesus’ teaching on the Holy Spirit “shifted” after His resurrection. He then began to speak plainly as to the empowering ministry of the Holy Spirit that would now also be available to those who believe. He did not speak in terms of “indwelling”, but rather of being “upon” or “clothed” with the Holy Spirit. Luke 24:49; Acts 2 Jesus then began to fulfill the prophecy of John the Baptist in John 1:32-33.

It is clear the ministry of the indwelling Holy Spirit is to prepare us for heaven. It seems to be also clear, the “upon” or Baptism in the Holy Spirit, is to equip us to carry out our mission upon the earth. We won’t need power in heaven, but we do need power on earth to fight the spiritual battles that face us in our obedience to the Lord’s commission to be witnesses.
