A Call to the Spirit

The psalmist said, deep calls to deep. Paul said no one knows the deep things of God but the Spirit of God Himself.

Psalm 42:7 (NASB95)
7 Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;  All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.

1 Corinthians 2:10 (NKJV)
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

Anyone who knows me or has been around my ministry for any length of time knows I am all for modern methodologies in promoting and preaching the kingdom of God. I am a firm believer in “packaging” the gospel in relevant ways for the present generation.  The full gospel is not just for past generations, but for both present and future ones as well. The gospel deserves our best presentation of it as possible. Relevancy is a major issue…but so is authenticity!

So, what I am about to write is not meant to be a “turning away” from  any  of these things. I have no regrets in the methodologies I’ve used in the past to reach people for Jesus! However, I must ask myself the question, “Whatever happened to the Holy Spirit being the real LIGHT SHOW in our midst?” When was the emphasis on the Holy Spirit’s power lost, or at least set to the side or regulated to the back room, even in Spirit-filled churches? The scriptures are clear. It’s not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord. Acts 2 is still authentic Christian experience as is the rest of the Book of Acts.. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is still relevant in the midst of our modern methodologies.

Paul said the Church was to go from glory to glory. In other words the “weighty” or “heavy” presence of God was to increase in the Church, not decrease. The latter rains are to be greater than the early rains. The final harvest is always greater than the early harvest. Say what you will, but a Holy Ghost power encounter will trump any argument or doubt the flesh may have concerning the truth of Jesus Christ being the same yesterday, today, and forever. Signs, wonders, miracles, and the display of genuine spiritual gifts has somehow given way to our methodologies. Heaven help us.

There is a deep, deep call from my spirit to the Spirit of God…and I believe a deep, deep call from the Spirit of God to my spirit…to release the Holy Spirit to operate in genuine power again. I’ll be the first to tell you from past experience that it’s not as “clean”, not as easy to fit into the box of a previously prescribed order of service, and not easy to plan for. You see once the river breaks forth, all you can do is “go with the flow” of the power released.

I say let’s be modern in our presentation of the gospel, but let us not forget to call on the Holy Spirit and His power to authenticate the message that we preach. This way insures we make disciples of Jesus, not ourselves or our way of doing things.
