Son’s of Issachar

1 Chronicles 12:32 (NASB95)
32 Of the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their kinsmen were at their command.

This simple verse in the Old Testament has been one of my favorites since I first discovered it “buried” in one of those list of who did what and when. We tend to breeze through those list and pay little attention to them…yet when we do so we overlook hidden treasure. Everything in the Bible was inspired and put there for a purpose. To study these things out is to find a blessing others miss.

The study of the sons of Issachar gives us a history of this “insightful” tribe. They are one of the tribes which rallied around King David at a critical time in Israel’s history. Saul has been killed. David is coming out of Ziklag and many of the tribes are gathering around him to face off with the remnants of Saul’s army and supporters.  They understood the season and with knowledge moved on behalf of the kingdom. In doing so, they led others in becoming a mighty nation before God.

Where are the sons of Issachar today?  Where are the people of understanding and knowledge? Where are the people who are “in the know” with God and are willing to come together for the greater good of the Church of Jesus Christ.

In this last days warfare there are two fronts in which the battles must be fought. One is the battlefront for the souls of men and women in the world in which we live. The second is more subtle but just as much a war zone. The battle between the house of Saul and the house of David, the traditional rule of men and the fresh moves of the Holy Spirit.

Don’t be so surprised. This is exactly the same battle Jesus faced as he confronted the man-made traditions of His day.  His followers were a new generation of believers likened to the “sons of Issachar”. They understood the times and knew what must be done for the sake of the kingdom of God.

…May we all choose to be likened to the sons of Issachar in these last days. A people who understand Jesus is coming back soon and who know what must be done, so the kingdom may be ready for its King!
