I am pondering the subject of unity for a leadership seminar I am doing at a mega church this coming week-end. The larger a church becomes the more important it is for leadership to maintain unity among its precious people. For this to happen there must a strong leadership team which continually seeks to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace and love.
The truth is that once a church reaches a certain size, the harder it is for “outside” attacks of the enemy to harm it. In fact, that church reaches a position of authority in the realm of the Spirit where it begins to literally dictate the mandates of the kingdom of God in its community and region. The devil knows the only way to destroy this type of church is from the inside.
Leaders have a tremendous responsibility to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace and love. Division among them must not occur. A divided head equals a divided heart which will in turn divide the body. James says a double minded man will receive nothing from the Lord. We can apply this principle to every area of life. Leadership’s responsibility is to discern the will of God and move into it in a unified front.
The only place I can find in scripture where “separation” is allowed is in the subject of truth. Jesus himself said these words…
Matthew 10:34–37 (NASB95)
34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 “For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW;
36 and A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.
37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
…Yes, this is one of the hard sayings of Jesus which you don’t hear preached much anymore. When we understand the “sword” in relationship to the “Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God” we come to realize truth may sometimes cause division of even the closest of human relationships.
From this, we can deduce that genuine unity can only occur when truth reigns supreme. It is to be stronger than any human relationship. We can unite for many different reasons but in the economy of God genuine unity can occur only when everyone is walking on the side of God’s truth. Leaders have the responsibility to keep their sheep unified in truth at all cost.
