I’ve had some great response to the “Grace is the Air of the Kingdom” post. One email asked me the question, “How to walk in this?” I will give you my expanded reply here:
We all struggle deeply with the issue of forgiveness at one time or another in our lives. I will share three thoughts with you…
1. Obedience is key for us as believers. Jesus said to pray, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” All I can say here is “Ouch!” We forgive because it is a principle in the kingdom which God highly values. So, we simply choose to do it. The key here is understanding how can we who have sinned and need forgiveness, not give it to those who need it just as badly as we?
2. Everything we do as christians is “by faith“. We believe what read in the Word and “by faith” just do it. Feelings have nothing to do with it. I have found the sooner I forgive and let go of a situation the sooner my “feelings” come into line. Deep hurts and offenses may take time for the wounds to heal. It’s just a fact. Just because you don’t “feel” like you haven’t forgiven, doesn’t mean you haven’t. Don’t let the devil bring condemnation upon you just because you don’t feel like you have forgiven someone. It’s the devil’s trap to keep you in condemnation when you didn’t do anything in the first place! There is a difference in forgiveness and healing. You may not be able to heal-up until you forgive, yet forgiveness is the beginning of a healing process.
3. In insanely deep offenses against you, you have to learn to look to Jesus on the cross, looking down as they gambled for His clothing and hearing Him say, “Father, forgive them they know not what they do.” Most of the people who do incredibly offensive things to us have no real understanding of what they are doing. If nothing else, the ramifications for troubling a child of God.
The quicker you and I can genuinely forgive, the quicker we kick the devil out of our way and we stop allowing people to live rent free in our heads and free the hands of God to work in the situation according to His will for us.
